Do you remember graduation day?
I've been hearing all these lofty graduation speech excerpts recently and all the exhortations to young people to make the most of their lives. Do you remember what was said at your graduation ceremony? I don't. I probably should've been paying more attention.
Whatever advice we got there or elsewhere, it probably told us to maintain a high level of character and reach for the stars, since they were ours for the taking.
Which brings me to the "graduation message" you are sending to young people every day with your behavior. Whether it is your own teenagers or the neighbor's kids, you are always on stage to people who are taking their cues from you.
Many of us try hard to project the image we want others to see. Maybe we need to project the image we hope others can learn from. In my case, I remember a few men who helped shape my life with their consistent display of empathy and gentleness but also toughness when that was required.
Being manly is not displaying raw macho toughness, but instead showing compassion, concern and empathy--and even vulnerability--in a world where those traits are in short supply. As you think about your own behavior, keep in mind that it is likely influencing at least one other person. Make it your best!

Help us to be aware that others are watching our behavior but to consistently live out your model, whether anyone sees it or not. Amen.
